These cards have one chip that can operate in both a contact mode (e.g. for logical access such as PC log-on or electronic verification) or in a contactless mode (e.g. for physical applications such as door access).
These cards typically operate using high level microprocessor chips running their own operating systems and sit on an advanced and secure platform such as the NXP Smart MX range
